Visit to Whidbey Island - June 24, 2006

Friday, June 30, 2006

On 24 Jun we visited Whidbey Island. This is located 30 miles north of Seattle. It is about 62 miles (100 km) long and considered third longest Island in USA. It is only 1.5 to 12 miles wide. The Pacific Bay area from the southern end of Whidbey Island to Olympia, a distance of about 90 miles, is called Puget Sound.

One can cross over to the southern tip of the island by State run ferry. The ferry boats can carry as many as 120 cars/trucks and 1200 people. It takes 20 minutes to cross the strait; frequency is every 30 minutes. The ferry has a large seating area and restaurants. The view from the ferry is breathtaking. Unfortunately, the experience lasts only for 20 min! A road access also exists via a bridge located at the northern tip of the Island. We came back via this bridge.

Whidbey Island has concrete bunkers from World War II era when it was used as protection against Japanese naval attacks. This area has been converted into a park called Fort Casey State Park. A coast guard artillery post features two historic guns.

The Island has as many as 7 parks to choose from. It has long beautiful beaches, but then, pacific water is always too cold to enjoy the swim. All of us carried the swimming gear but only Kuhu was bold enough to wade-in.

Honoring a Red Indian woman. Whidbey Island was once
inhabited by Native Red Indian tribes, till it was discovered
by Captain George Vancouver in 1790. The first non-native,
a missionary, arrived on 26 May 1840 and that was the end of
the natives!

Frolicking in frigid waters!

Pristine waters of the beautiful beach.

Deception Pass

It cost $482,000 to construct this bridge in 1935.
It cost more to paint the spans in 1983!

Deception Pass

This bridge is across a narrow deep and turbulent channel called Deception Pass, joining Whidbey and Fidalgo Islands. The steel cantilever bridge was opened on July 31, 1935. Some statistics - Height above water 180'. Length 1487 feet. 28 feet wide. On an average 20,000 vehicles use it everyday.

Fruit Farm

Roadside farms allow visitors to pick fruits,
get them weighed and pay a fraction of market
price.
We enjoyed plucking fresh strawberries.

Gun Placements

In the background can be seen omnipresent
Mount Rainier. It was cloudless day,
very unusual for Seattle.

All on the tree!

Fort Casey

In 1858, the U.S Govt purchased ten acres of
land costing $400 for the construction of this
Lighthouse. The present Lighthouse
was rebuilt in 1901.

Fort Casey

Date of manufacture on the rim of
the gun is indicated as 1895. The two
aberrations on the top left and right
corners are in fact kites!

Fort Casey

One of the two surviving Second World War
6" guns, which protected north-west USA from
Japanese naval attack

The guys in the patrol boats were quite a show-off.
They kept zipping in circles at high speeds. People
didn't like it a bit. It was waste of their tax dollars!
